LATEST: Police fires shots at Kombi, passenger hospitalised with buttock gunshot wound

A POLICE officer on Sunday shot three civilians during a speed chase with an errant commuter operator in Harare which left three passengers hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

Twenty-four-year old Dylan Chidhava was injured on the left buttock.

Violet Wairesi (32) was injured on her right thigh while 27-year-old Shupikai Kachaya suffered an ankle injury police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed.

Nyathi said the driver, one David Kambudzi, 26, was eventually caught and arrested for driving without a license and failing to obey police instructions.

He also had no route authority, vehicle license and passengers’ license.

It was not clear at the time of publishing if the police officer will face trial for excessive use of fire arms.

However, the driver is now facing attempted murder charges for driving towards the police officer and reckless driving.

The speed chase emanated when the commuter operator failed to stop at a police road block at Mabvuku turn off, Nyathi said.

He is said to have tried to run over the police officer as he sped off.

“The policer officer avoided injury by jumping on the side of the road,” Nyathi said.

“A man with a Toyota wish approached the scene and said to the police officer ‘let’s pursue the Kombi driver.’ They pursued the kombi and caught up with it at Msasa Shopping Centre.  The kombi driver refused to stop and the police officer fired three warning shots. The driver again refused to stop.

He then fired shots at the kombi in an attempt to deflate the vehicle tyres. The kombi stopped at Minerals Marketing after three people had been injured. As police, we want to apologise for this unfortunate incident which could have been avoided if the driver had taken heed of police instructions.”
