Harare approves housing waiting list fees
City Council (HCC) has approved a ZWL2OO fee increase to be levied those on the housing waiting list, Zim Morning Post has established.
This was revealed in the Education, Health, Housing and Community Services and Licensing Committee minutes released recently.
HCC, which is battling to clear a 151 000 housing backlog, also announced an interview fee of ZWL200 payable before one can be allocated a stand. An administration fee each of ZWL 2 000 and ZWL 3 000 for medium and low-density stands, respectively, was also introduced.
In a meeting, Director of Housing and Community Services Admore Nhekairo said ring-fencing proceeds from the housing waiting list and conducted interviews was vital if the state or district offices across the capital were to be improved.
The meeting also asked HCC’s Corporate Communication Division to issue out a statement justifying the increase in housing waiting and interview fees.
This is despite the demand for housing has outstripped land availability, without the city authorities putting in place contingency plans to ensure that those on the housing waiting list are serviced.
According to last year’s statistics, at least half a million home-seekers are currently registered on the council’s housing waiting list. This development also comes at a time when numerous politically motivated settlements have been left to flourish in the capital, including those established on wetlands.
