Give ZACC prosecution powers: Manicaland citizens
The people of Manicaland have called for Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to be given more powers to deal effectively with corruption in government and private sector.
As the drive to combat corruption continues to gather momentum, the people of Manicaland say ZACC should be given prosecuting powers to deal effectively with the vice.
The sentiments came out during public hearings on the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Amendment Bill of 2019 conducted by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Budget, Finance, and Economic Development held in Mutare this Tuesday
“We feel that ZACC should be given more powers and there should be no interference from anyone especially top officials,” said one Manicaland resident.
Mutare residents also took time to chastise parliamentarians against their rowdy behavior in the August House and urged them to avoid shortchanging the people they represent.
“We do not want you to take the electorate for granted act like grown-ups and debate issues for the sole purpose of coming up with the best solutions for the people,” said another citizen.
The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, Honourable Felix Mhona expressed gratitude to the people of Manicaland for their contributions, adding that the high turnout is a clear testimony that citizens are keen to participate in legislative issues.
“I’m glad to say that the people of Manicaland are very conversant with the issues that were being discussed. In terms of quality, we have realized that people have quite a lot. It shows that they really want our laws to work,” he said.
The Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Amendment Bill of 2019 intend to strengthen the provisions in the law to combat corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing while at the same time ensuring that law enforcement agents are effective in carrying out their mandate.
