The official opening has been set for today at 2pm in the afternoon and the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa will attend the festival as the guest of honor.

This will be the second time the First Lady will be attending the festival.

In an interview with the festival director Maimba Mapuranga said:

“Celebrate the children sports and arts festival is an annual festival that we host in partnership with the Child Welfare Department in the Ministry of Labour and Social Services. It has become arguably the biggest corporate social responsibility, single event for children’s homes in Zimbabwe.

Eight years ago when we started we only had seven homes but we have grown now to about 23 homes this year, we are expecting a total of about 800 children from ages 5 right up to 21.

These homes will come and play in different sports disciplines such as soccer, netball, volleyball, tug of war. We will also have athletics competitions, tennis and the art night.”

The Celebrate the Children director and his team this year partnered with a number of organizations including Proud Africa, a humanitarian consultant which is involved in mentorship, seminars and life skills training together with Premier Outreach.

Steward Bank, Telecel and Homelink are the other partners to this years’ festival edition.
